video game discussion

3:07 PM - buntcake: i’ve been thinking a lot about game design the past couple years
3:08 PM - buntcake: there are people like jonathan blow who believe that any carrot on a stick is garbage design and even something as simple as coins in mario is just pointlessly rewarding the player to make them feel more satisfied for no reason
3:08 PM - buntcake: but some people also think that’s /fun/ so
3:08 PM - buntcake: idk its interesting
3:09 PM - Fewes: Yeah, I agree
3:09 PM - Fewes: Like, it’s all about making the player feel good
3:09 PM - Fewes: Which is why to me jrpgs are the most boring fucking thing ever
3:09 PM - Fewes: because the feedback usually is very bad
3:10 PM - Fewes: If you get engaged in them that’s different though
3:10 PM - buntcake: to say that carrot on a stick is garbage because you dont find it fun even though many others do is like dismissing their opinions, like saying your taste is better than theirs
3:11 PM - buntcake: while I do believe my taste in games is probably better than (friend who likes jrpgs) that doesnt mean his opinion is invalid because I dont like what he likes
3:11 PM - Fewes: yeah, I’m just saying I don’t enjoy that
3:11 PM - Fewes: nono
3:11 PM - Fewes: I didn’t mean that lol
3:11 PM - buntcake: no no i just meant you as a pronoun that isnt me
3:11 PM - Fewes: o
3:11 PM - Fewes: rite
3:11 PM - Fewes: a game I always think of when I think about this is cod4
3:12 PM - Fewes: because that was the first shooter that had feedback popups
3:12 PM - Fewes: like xp and stuff
3:12 PM - Fewes: it perfectly combined a reward system with persistence
3:12 PM - Fewes: and every shooter does that now
3:12 PM - Fewes: to the point where it cheapens the experience imo
3:13 PM - Fewes: like just look at all the shit bf3/bf4 rewards you for
3:13 PM - Fewes: bf4 has xp rewards for not even doing anything
3:13 PM - Fewes: like flag owned by team, squad gets kill etc.
3:13 PM - Fewes: all just to get you hooked
3:14 PM - buntcake: is that bad though? like some people eat that shit up
3:14 PM - buntcake: its bad for me
3:14 PM - buntcake: obviously
3:14 PM - Fewes: I think it is
3:14 PM - Fewes: Obviously it sells
3:14 PM - Fewes: but if we are talking about good game design vs making money off of stupid teenagers
3:14 PM - Fewes: I think it’s bad
3:15 PM - Fewes: they can do whatever they want of course and in the end it’s about making money
3:15 PM - buntcake: I remember someone telling me about a conversation they had once with a friend of theirs who was a big designer for popcap games
3:15 PM - buntcake: popcap games being the creators of plants v zombies, bejeweled, peggle, etc
3:16 PM - buntcake: about how their design like, philosophies I GUESS? are, bright colors, loud combos, and high reward for the player
3:16 PM - buntcake: and their target demo is always like
3:16 PM - buntcake: 30-40 year old housewives
3:18 PM - Fewes: that’s basically app games in a nutshell
3:20 PM - buntcake: my mom cant play games that are more complicated than bejeweled or tetris she just gets mad and frustrated
3:20 PM - buntcake: she has like no technical skill whatsoever
3:20 PM - buntcake: is it like
3:21 PM - buntcake: should game designers have better morals about making quality games
3:21 PM - buntcake: or should they just give people what they want
3:21 PM - buntcake: idk
3:21 PM - Fewes: it’s tricky
3:22 PM - Fewes: I as a person who enjoys video games very much feel annoyed that they are booming with “casuals” if I may use a buzzword because developers try and cash in on them
3:22 PM - Fewes: of course it is a bout making money in the end
3:22 PM - Fewes: but I can’t help but think that the big devs were a bit better some years ago idk
3:22 PM - Fewes: I mean the games that are made today are really quite amazing
3:22 PM - buntcake: yeah thats true, but games weren’t as widely accepted/accessible either
3:23 PM - Fewes: yeah I know
3:23 PM - buntcake: is that because they’ve just been around longer or is it because there are more easy to digest games now
3:23 PM - Fewes: I’m fine with devs cashing in on casual games as long as I can have some interesting titles
3:24 PM - Fewes: really the only thing that genuinely upsets me is stuff like
3:24 PM - Fewes: the newest ace combat game
3:24 PM - Fewes: because I love that series and they basically tried to make it call of duty to cash in and failed
3:24 PM - Fewes: that to me is selling your integrity
3:24 PM - Fewes: a lot of people scuff at that and say you can’t care about that too much and that have to make money
3:24 PM - Fewes: but fuck you
3:25 PM - Fewes: have some integrity you piece of shit
3:25 PM - buntcake: there are a lot of games lately that have been like ruined by some guys in suits being like “yeah just make it exactly like that other game that made a ton of money but with a new coat of paint, it’ll be great”
3:26 PM - Fewes: see ea
3:26 PM - buntcake: haha
3:26 PM - Fewes: biggest problem imo is that the people calling the shots aren’t the ones that are interested in making a good game
3:26 PM - Fewes: so a lot of the time decisions are made that other lower level people KNOW are wrong

3:27 PM - Fewes: but because mr smith sucked an exec dick were going to get call of warshit 48

3:27 PM - Fewes: this is a problem in many industries though, not just games
3:27 PM - Fewes: I think as soon as you make it into a big production it goes to shit honestly
3:28 PM - Fewes: with some exceptions

Photos from my trip to the Dota 2 International in Seattle!

My photos from IT3!! For anyone who doesn’t know I was invited by Valve to demo at their workshop station among a few other workshop artists. I wish I had taken more photos, but I suck at this kind of thing. I really wanna pick up an affordable SLR for events I go to, I think it would encourage me to take more and better photos. Anyway here’s what I got on my crappy point and shoot- it’s a LONG POST with a lot of photos, sorry in advance!

hey !!!! I didn’t know you are an artist! I’m def gonna follow u I love your art <3 Are you planning on going to TI4?? I’m already making plans with friends that involve cosplay !

kheleksul:

So I’m going to TI3, right? I thought it would be pretty neat to bring some prints to get them signed and etc. Well.. So long as I’m bringing some prints, I may as well bring a couple of extra for my friends! And so long as I’m bringing a relatively small pack of prints, I can print off a couple…

I sent you an ask but I wanted to make sure you saw what I said;; I’m one of the workshop artists on the upper level above the analysts’ booth and I would LOVE to meet you if you stop by, if you’d like just ask for buntcake or Sarah, I totally LOVE your art! ;A;

fewes:

After working on this for forever, here it finally is. Windrunner is my favorite hero by far and I love the look Suguro came up with. She did the design and bow texture, and I did the rest of the model/textures.
If you like it, be sure to check it out in the workshop!
